The question is whether we want every receiving device to have to know  
about multiple coordinate or grid systems.  Most implementers, I'm  
pretty sure, would say "no."  And WGS-84 is the single most widely  
deployed global coordinate system... not the only one, not even  
necessarily the best, but the one on which a consensus could be  
obtained.  And it seems to be working reasonably well.

Regrettably, this topic seems to have strong political and/or  
religious overtones.  My advice would be that, having managed to reach  
an agreement that works, we should be slow to complicate things for  
implementers by reopening the question.
